1963 Vietnamese Burning Buddhist Monk in Colour

PhotoShop was used to give colour (and life) to Malcolm Browne‘s famous shot of the Vietnamese Buddhist monk, Thích Quảng Đức, who burned himself to protest the persecution of Buddhists in South Vietnam in 1963. The orange of the monks and the fire makes the scene more all the more powerful don’t you think?

New Giant Cave in Vietnam Can Fit a Skyscraper

Hang Ken is one of 20 new caves discovered last year in Vietnam and is so massive that apparently, a skyscraper can fit inside. The photo below shows a giant cave column swagged in flowstone towers over explorers swimming through the depths of this cave.

Preserved Egg Snacks Complete with Embryo Eaten as Aphrodisiac

Though we’re no stranger to preserved eggs, these *beauties* posted by Twitter user @Phuong_Mai almost made us heave. So apparently, the egg on the left is a duck egg. Looks like the thousand-year-old eggs we’ve seen before. (Of course, they’re not really that old, just preserved for a few weeks or months.)

Yuk-Eggs

However, @Phuong_Mai tells us the one on the right is also a thousand-year-old egg, which is sold by street vendors in Vietnam and South East Asia. An aphrodisiac that’s high in nutrition, buyers chew on the little chick and spit out the bones….

Don’t you just love reading about East Asia?

Glimpses of Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam

Here’s some nice camera work shot with a Canon 5D Mark II by Ivan Vania, who travelled through Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. It reminds us of our recent travels through those countries, albeit in a calmer light.

Crunchy West Lake Shrimp Cakes

West Lake Shrimp Cakes are a speciality in Hanoi, north Vietnam. We try some in a lakeside restaurant and think they’re a little too greasy and crunchy – since the shrimp shells are still left on!
