Vintage Japanese Robots

Iconic graphic designer Tom Geismar, whose firm Chermayeff & Geismar has created memorable logos for Mobil, PBS and other U.S. institutions, has been collecting Japanese toy robots for decades.

The Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame in Seattle will exhibit toys from Geismar’s collection in Robots: A Designer’s Collection of Miniature Mechanical Marvels through Oct. 26.

The vintage robots on display reflect Geismar’s trained eye. “I’ve really restricted myself to ones that appealed to me as interesting, imaginative designs,” he says.

Tokidoki and Tokyoplastic Geisha Designer Toy Crossover

This is a pretty cool, four inch figure of Tokyoplastic’s signature Geisha character, which is the result of a rare artistic cross over with themselves and illustrator Tokidoki.

If you’re a fan of both styles, it might be worth investing a cool $40 for this figure.

Super Mario BROS on Nintendo DS Cake

Check out this nice and compact looking Nintendo DS Cake featuring Super Mario Bros, as posted by the blog soyandpepper.

Mario-Ds

Its not as impressive (I think) as potentially the most impressive Mario 3D cake, but it can still hold its own against the retro Nintendo cake, although it might be overshadowed by what seems to be the tallest Nintendo (wedding) cake!

The Nintendo DS cake might be better if the top screen were also cake, and they included a stylus knife..

Disturbing Japanese dolls

All manner of dolls (and outfits to dress them in) seem to be popular in Japan, but these ones seem a little freaky. They seem to be a more humanised version of the robot design in the film iRobot (Will Smith).

Freaky Doll

Even worse is the ability to swap some “parts” to show a slightly different mood…

Michael Lau x Nike China BMX Blazer

Perhaps the world’s most recognisable designer toy designer, Michael Lau, who is based in Hong Kong, worked with Nike to come up with the following very unique China BMX Blazer.

From Hypebeast:

The shoes come in “Chinese” colors with yellow all around and red shoelaces and insole. It has great details such as the flares of the sun drawn on the sides, and the year 20-08 on the left and right shoe separately.

It comes with a vinyl biker figure and his bike, all in a special box that seems to be covered with dirt.
