Muay Thai Boxer vs Banana Tree

You may have fantasised about doing this after watching Jean-Claude Van Damme‘s Kickboxer, but this Muay Thai boxer does it for real. Watch as he takes down a defenceless tree with his shins (and a few punches for good measure)…

Amazing Story Behind a Floating Soccer Pitch in Thailand

We just watched this commercial but entertaining short film meant to portray the beginnings of Panyee FC, one of the most successful youth soccer clubs in Southern Thailand.

What makes their story unusual is that the club started in a fishing village on stilts meaning the pitch had to be created to float on water. Apparently, the children were inspired by the 1986 FIFA World Cup.

So the next time you’d want a kick about, just thank someone that you might not actually have to build the pitch yourself. What we will say however, is that regularly jumping in the water for the ball has got to be refreshing or a pain in the ass.

Bangkok Cable Ways Exhibition by Thomas Kalak

Photographer Thomas Kalak wrote to let us know about his new exhibition “Bangkok Cable Ways” in the museum “Pablo Picasso” in Münster, Germany. The book to the exhibition will be released at the same time.

Kalak-Bangkok-Book

If you’ve ever been to Bangkok or in fact to any of the major towns in nearby Vietnam, the sight depicted in Kalak’s photos won’t surprise you, though might still derive a small sense of awe in the complexity of wires shown. Tough job for the guy who has to locate a fault.

Kalak-Bangkok-Cables-0005

Thomas Kalak’s takes a photographic view of supposedly meaningless details in the urban context that only become valuable as the subject of an image by the fact that they are constantly in the urban panorama. His latest series “bangkok cable ways” is dedicated to the electricity and telecommunications cables omnipresent in Bangkok that seems to carry on their own lives above the heads of passers-by – unplanned, uncontrolled and just plain chaotic.

Thomas Kalak’s “Bangkok Cable Ways”, at Museum Picasso, Münster Germany
From 19.3.11 to 3.7.11.

Tilt Shift Thailand

Despite the tilt-shift effect being put to good use already elsewhere, perhaps you’d enjoy another example with this one featuring scenes from Bangkok, Phuket and Railay. We miss Thailand!

Tiger and Piglets Living Together

Sai Mai, a 26-month-old female tiger, plays with baby pigs at a zoo in Thailand‘s Chonburi province, 50 miles east of Bangkok, on May 7, 2004. The Royal Bengali tigress was born in captivity and breast-fed by a female pig for four months after her birth.

Tiger-Piglet

This happened awhile ago but has been making the net rounds recently. I wouldn’t be surprised if those piglets disappeared shortly afterwards.

Bug Fighting in South East Asia

Lost At E Minor posted a few interesting photos of bug fighting held in a cemetery about half an hour outside of Chiang Mai.

Bug-Fight1

The bug fights apparently happen late in the year when the stags are at their randiest, and they’re pitted against each other with the winner throwing their opponent off the revolving log they’re placed on.

Thai Boxing

Blogsite, The Art of Manliness takes a look at Thailand’s national sport, Muay Thai. Whilst there’s no doubt a commonality between the toughness of Muay Thai and the nature of manliness (ok, we know ladies get involved too!), there’s a gentlemen-ly side to the sport too, with fighters paying respect to each other’s camp and to their heritage.
