Anti-Terrorism Exercises in China

Following the Segway Chinese Police Unit post, here are more photos of anti-terrorism exercises in China.

Chinamil1

In June, China launched a week-long series of anti-terrorist drills called “Great Wall 5“, in preparation for the upcoming 2008 Olympic Games.

The drills involved emergency responders, “police forces, the People’s Armed Police, the People’s Liberation Army and the health, environmental protection, meteorology and transportation departments.” according to China’s Xinhua News Agency.

Fantastic Photos of Tokyo At Night by Sato Shintaro

Sato Shintaro has a truly excellent series of photos taken of Tokyo at night.

Sata-Shintaro1

I’m not sure if a special technique is used to give clarity to so many of the buildings in the foreground or whether a long exposure does the job.

Either way, they are really interesting photos, and the high vantage point is a step away from the usual shots of busy Tokyo streets.

See more at ArkiBlog where the shots can also be enlarged

Chinese Photographer Shi Guorui’s Large Scale Black and White Cityscapes

Chinese photographer Shi Guorui presents a timely collection of five large-scale, black-and-white photographs, each at least two meters in length, that capture some of the most mesmerizing new cityscapes around the world.

Shi-Guorui1

Working in situ within special rooms, Shi used the traditional pinhole-camera technique of the camera obscura to capture skylines that blur into the distance, endowing his images with an ephemeral quality.

Shi-Guorui2

His negative-style prints - the lights and shadows are inverted - further set the tone, showcasing the blend of old character and recent growth in the modern metropolises of Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Las Vegas.

Shi Guorui’s work on show in Hong Kong at the 10 Chancery Lane Gallery from now through August 30th, 2008.

Tiananmen Square Standoff in Lego

Despite the seminal and emotionally charged moment caught by Jeff Widener’s 1989 photograph of “The unknown rebel” at Tiananmen Square, here’s a new way of looking at it.

Flickr user Balakov recreates moments from human history including this one.
