Hanbok Adoration – Korean Fashion

If we’re honest, we’re not the best ones to interpret the following images, taken from the edgy blog Twisted Lamb. But what looks like a modern twist to traditional Korean fashion certainly caught our eye.

Seoul’s Subway Highlights

Strange as it may be to point out the merits of a city’s subway system, you’d do worse than find out which stops are worth checking out in Seoul. For us, the journey’s between stations are particularly long in comparison to say, Taiwan’s metro. And so it’s worth pointing out that the ride between Hapjeong and Dangsan on Line 2 brings up this gorgeous vista as the train crosses the Han River.

Cartoon Skeleton Sculptures

Korean artist Hyungkoo Lee, who lives and works in Seoul, has a clever series of sculptures, titled Animatus, that brings to life (or death) classic Disney characters such as Bugs Bunny and Road Runner, albeit as skeletons.

The use of Latin naming to give a faux-scientific approach to the amusing subject matter rounds off the collection. If you’re in New York, consider giving these sculptures your time, as they’re apparently on show there.

South Korea Subway’s New Virtual Supermarket

Subway platforms in South Korea (looks like Seoul?) now have excellent built in virtual supermarket “shelves” that allow travellers to browse and shop while they wait. The shelves are actually just large poster images of the real shelves, but each item has a QR code that shoppers can snap with their smart phones to input into a virtual shopping basket, which they can then order and have the products delivered.

Virtual-Supermarket-Korea

Created by Tesco, who’ve rebranded themselves as Homeplus in South Korea, we thought this was a great idea to pass the time but wonder how it all happens during rush hour. Find out more about the system below:

Toilet Shaped House in South Korea

If you could build the house of your dreams, would you shape it after a toilet? Well, that’s what Sim Jae-Duck, the former congressman and mayor of Suwon in South Korea, did! The eccentric Sim was reportedly born in a bathroom and developed an interest in toilets during his mayoral term.

Haeujae-Jeongyeong

Unfortunately, he passed away in 2009, but that’s only meant that the house has now been turned into a toilet museum. Visitors can view exhibitions on the history of restrooms and of course, use the toilet, which is the grandest room in the centre of the building…

Realistic Paintings of Hair and Braid Patterns

Korean-born artist So Yoon Lym creates these realistic paintings of hair and braid patterns. With their uniform angle and monochromatic approach, they’re really quite stylish and give time to this hair craft, which too often only garners a quick glimpse from a distance.

Eating Live Octopus in Seoul

Our friend Patrick, of Scription blog fame, went to Seoul recently and happened to try out some live octopus. Check out his video below with the octopus tentacles, served up in a bowl with some sauce, still alive and writhing. Patrick stresses he doesn’t support animal cruelty.

Would you? Wouldn’t you?

Patrick also experienced some other culinary explorations – in the shape of deliciously tasting but stomach-heave-inducing fat pupae.
