British Chinese Feature Film ‘Fortune Cookies’

Comedy ‘Fortune Cookies‘ is the first film from new British Chinese writer/director Brenda Lee to be shot in the Midlands and London in 2012. Les Dennis stars and you can see a promo clip of him below “losing the plot”.

Family vs Ambition. Love vs Duty. Chekhov vs Chicken Feet?!
Set to star Elaine Tan (CSI), David Yip (Chinese Detective), Pik Sen Lim (Dr Who), Meline Danielewicz (The Tempest), David Tse (Spooks) and Ozzie Yue (Father Ted) amongst others.

Will Susan Lee forfeit her dream stage debut to save the family Chinese takeaway from repossession by appearing alongside her tradition yet extrememly embarrassing family on Les Dennis’ TV game show ‘Fame To Fortune’?

Watch an interview with our director and find out more about the educational element of the film – working with young people to provide them with a Learning, Literacy and Livelihoods workshop programme – at www.sponsume.com/project/fortune-cookies-feature-film.

Andy Lau and Zhang Ziyi Sculptures – The House of Flying Daggers

Bizarrely, in the bamboo forest where The House of Flying Daggers was filmed, there appears to be an attempt to turn it into a tourist site by featuring sculptures of two of the film’s stars: Andy Lau and Zhang Ziyi.

Flying-Daggers

We’re not sure if this is an official tourist attraction, what with the half naked bust of Zhang Ziyi appearing to bath in the mud, but the likenesses of both stars isn’t half bad.

Hong Kong Film Archive Presents 100 Must-See Movies

Twitch Film reports on the Hong Kong Film Archive‘s announcement to screen their pick of the 100 must see movies, chosen from their archive of 90,000 films. A film will be shown every two weeks making the programme run for four years!

Way-Of-The-Dragon

There’s plenty of martial arts favourites in there (our favourite being any of Tsui Hark’s Wong Fei Hung movies), together with a selection from all genres. But with films running from 1916 to 1999, its quite a list for any film fan to peruse.

Check out the full list of the Hong Kong Film Archive’s 100 Must-See Movies on Twitch

Movie Posters by Claudia Varosio

Claudia Varosio has a clean, unfussy illustration style in a few of her interpretations of film posters. We like her mood-matching “In The Mood for Love” poster, but our favourite has to be the “Seven Samurai” poster. Both are on sale for $19.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi – A Documentary Following 85 Year Old Master Sushi Chef

Jiro Dreams of Sushi was shown in April 2011 at the Tribeca Film Festival, but will hopefully reach general release some time soon. It looks to be a gorgeously shot and interesting documentary following the 85-year-old master sushi chef Jiro Ono.

Jiro Dreams Of Sushi

From the Tribeca website:

…Jiro Ono, owner of the esteemed 10-seat, $300-a-plate Sukiyabashi Jiro restraurant in Tokyo. From the ins and outs of the tuna auction to the proper way to massage an octopus, director David Gelb dynamically profiles all aspects of the craft in mouthwatering style and detail, paying lushly photographed homage to the process of preparing the artisan sushi that earned Jiro an elite three Michelin stars.

Catch a trailer of the film below:

Akira Condensed into One Movie Poster

The 1988 cult anime film Akira set in a futuristic Tokyo has been condensed into one poster. Apparently, every event that happens is depicted in this poster, designed by Tyler Stout for the Alamo/Mondo Mystery Movie.

Mondo posters are extremely limited editions (we’ve never been able to get one) and this rare Akira poster could only have been bought at the Alamo – if you had bought tickets for a film you didn’t know about yet.

Film Trailer: The Malay Chronicles: Bloodlines

Our friend, actor Jing Lusi, recently went to Malaysia to promote ‘Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa‘ (International title: ‘The Malay Chronicles: Bloodlines‘). Since it was released in Malaysia on the 10th March, it has since broken box office records and is currently at number one in the charts. The beautiful Jing plays the Chinese princess in the film, which combines romance, adventure and martial arts against the backdrop of ancient Malay, Roman and Chinese civilisations. Watch the trailer below for more….

Jing is also in a British gangster thriller called Jack Falls, which features a lot of British actors including Tamer Hassan, Dexter Fletcher, Olivia Hallinan, and Jason Flemyng.
