Tape with Easy-to-find End

This ingenious design would be a god send in many a household without a (tape) dispenser. Designed by Deockeun An, Jaehyung Kim and Cheolwoong Seo, the tape allows the end to be stuck with a convenient gap underneath for easier use later on.

Cheap Water Bottle Lighting in Philippines

The BBC recently ran a short video report on a simple initiative to bring cheap lighting to the Philippines poorest people. It’s a short and sweet fascinating look at the effectiveness of design for a well deserved cause. The lighting is achieved with just a plastic bottle filled with water (and a little bleach to prevent the growth of algae) and the project is called “Litre of Light“. Fantastic!

Toilet Shaped House in South Korea

If you could build the house of your dreams, would you shape it after a toilet? Well, that’s what Sim Jae-Duck, the former congressman and mayor of Suwon in South Korea, did! The eccentric Sim was reportedly born in a bathroom and developed an interest in toilets during his mayoral term.

Haeujae-Jeongyeong

Unfortunately, he passed away in 2009, but that’s only meant that the house has now been turned into a toilet museum. Visitors can view exhibitions on the history of restrooms and of course, use the toilet, which is the grandest room in the centre of the building…

Bat Winged Pegasus on Retro Japanese Cigarette Advert

Retro cigarette advert prints from both Japan and China usually feature demurely dress women and are popular in tourist markets. But surely nothing can top a bat-winged pegasus, which was apparently the mascot of Peacock Cigarettes? Superb.

Monkey King Vodka Bottle Design

We missed the boat on this limited edition Absolut vodka bottle design, but it doesn’t stop us appreciating the art, designed for the Chinese market by Gao Yu. It features the legend of Sun Wukong / the Monkey King.

Movie Posters by Claudia Varosio

Claudia Varosio has a clean, unfussy illustration style in a few of her interpretations of film posters. We like her mood-matching “In The Mood for Love” poster, but our favourite has to be the “Seven Samurai” poster. Both are on sale for $19.

Cloud Lamp

For something in the home that’s suspended, this Cloud Lamp is an ingenious idea for a lamp designed by Zhao Liping. It was apparently inspired by the poem of Xu Zhimo.

Tapehooks

Simplicity and quirkiness abound in this design for a hook that looks like a piece of cut out tape – by Japanese designers Torafu Architects. Apparently, these hooks are actually paper that’s been curled, soaked and then dried, which gives them enough strength to hang small accessories.
