Scription - Thoughts on Stationary and Beyond

If you like all manner of good quality and unique stationary, you might like Hong Kong based Patrick Ng’s blog.

Titled Scription, he writes “thoughts on stationary and beyond” and puts together blog posts with ideas, news and great photos of his stuff and what he creates, stationary-wise.

Scription

It probably helps that he works for stationary provider City’Super in Hong Kong, but then he does have a good sense of taste in his choice of leather, wood materials and traditional hand printing techniques.

Of course, there is also the Moleskine..

Creative Hong Kong in London at the Design Museum

I’ve just come back from the opening reception of the Creative Hong Kong in London exhibition.

This event was hosted by the Design Museum as part of the “Lates” festival of after-hours art and culture in London and was attended by some of the featured designers from Hong Kong.

Creative-Hong-Kong1

If you get a chance to drop by, its well worth a visit to dip into what’s going on across the different fields of design in Hong Kong. You have to be quick - its only on until 12th June, 2008…

London - Hong Kong Food Guide

Tasty Treats is an excellent food blog by freelance journalist Charmaine:

Charmaine can count on one hand the occasions in which she’d willingly gotten up before the crack of dawn – the first reason being free maple syrup and pancakes at the Calgary Stampede in Canada; and the second, promise of fresh tuna at Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo.

Tasty-Treats

Currently, she divides her time between London and Hong Kong, the latter in where her days are spent defying the skinny-Minnie norm by eating as much as her gut and wallet will allow.

She recently blogged about restauranteur Alan Yau’s latest opening Cha Cha Moon here.

Hong Kong Picture Moment : Pillar of Shame painted orange

A student paints the sculpture “Pillar of Shame” orange during a demonstration by pressure group the Hong Kong Alliance.

Supporting the Patriotic Democratic Movement of China, the group expressed its human-rights concerns at the University of Hong Kong on April 30, 2008.

Pillar-Of-Shame

The sculpture, designed by Danish artist Jens Galschiot, was created to symbolise those who died in the government crackdown in Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989.

Elderly Work-Out In Hong Kong’s Public Parks

“Beyond the traditional sports such as Taijiquan exercises in the morning, there are many work-out parcours in parks or estates in Hong Kong and Macau.”

Macauworkout

“While it seems to be possible to grow older and remain an active lifestyle in China, being elderly in western society at the same time predetermines you to be totally passive.”

Made in Hong Kong - Buy Hand Picked Hong Kong Products from Design Shop Kiosk

Every so often, NYC design shop Kiosk rotates in an entire stock from an individual country.

Past nations have included Japan and Sweden, and the latest is China, or more specifically, Hong Kong.

Made-In-Hong-Kong-Knife-1

They range from a paper Ping-Pong set (made for burning during Chinese funerals) and a scarlet lampshade (insert “red light district” joke here) to so-called harsh tobacco, which is exactly what it sounds like (and comes in a cool matchbox-sized paper container).

Made-In-Hong-Kong-Sticks

The selections are also online, where you can peruse owner Alisa Grifo’s oddball product descriptions, like the one of the pictured handmade knife: “Zing! Only nine fingers left!“.

See the shop at KioskKiosk.com but hurry before they move onto their next country!

Film Trailer for CJ7 : Stephen Chow’s New Film

CJ7 is an upcoming 2008 science fiction/comedy film written, produced and directed by Stephen Chow, who also stars in the film. Here’s a two minute trailer:

Chow plays a man who lives in a partly demolished house and who takes in a homeless boy (who is actually played by a girl, Xu Jiao).

As Chow’s character can’t afford to buy a toy for the child, he finds a makeshift toy in the garbage and brings it back to his “son”. The toy is actually an alien and other aliens are desperate to get it back.

Stephen Chow Sing-Chi, is a scriptwriter, film director and actor in many blockbuster movies in Hong Kong and is considered to be one of the finest Hong Kong screen comedians. He was responsible for many popular hits including “Shaolin Soccer” (2001) and “Kung Fu Hustle” (2004), which were both applauded in the West.

From the looks of the trailer, CJ7 seems to adopt alot of CGI, but judging by the wacky physical entertainment of Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, may work quite well with Stephen’s brand of humour.
