Crispy Taiwan Crab Snacks
Whilst in Taipei last month, we came across these packets of dried snacks in the Eslite book store. Dried seafood is nothing too unusual in East Asian supermarkets – I’ve grown up on dried chilli cuttlefish etc. But these packets contained little whole crabs, shells and all!

I guess you’re meant to chew on each one like crisps. Anyone tried this before? Here’s another packet which has assorted contents…

Well, just FYI, those are Japanese snacks as indicated by the Japanese characters on the packaging. Most brands and types are pretty tasty, having a crispy, crunchy texture. Some, though, are flavored too sweet for my taste.
Hey, thanks for the note. At the very least I just put “Taiwan Crab Snacks” rather than “Taiwanese Crab Snacks”!
Wow – I couldn’t imagine these even being sweet.. Have you actually tried the crabs and eaten the shells?
Found similar snacks at Japanese supermarkets in SoCal, such as Marukai and Mitzuwa. Don’t think they were the same brand but I have tried the crab ones. Its basically very light and crunchy. No “meat” or much of anything inside the shells. Just crunch down on the crab, shell and all. That shiny orange-y coating on the crab shell is the flavoring.
