It's really just a fairly obvious extension of George Lucas' original conception - isn't it immediately clear that GL based much of starwars on "popular" notions of Samurai culture anyway? I mean, the Jedi are essentially Kurosawa-style samurai complete with sci-fi katanas (they're even 'ronin' by Episode 4), Darth Vader's helmet is quite obviously a 'kabuto'... etc. etc. Yawn burp.
