Five East Asian Music Acts to Watch in 2008

Time.com has a recommendation of the five Asian acts to watch in 2008.

Sounds like an interesting range of non-clichéd styles from the low key digital composer, The Analogue Girl, to the diverse fusion of genres (rock, deep funk, soul, R&B, jazz and latin) offered by The Out of Body Special.

Find out the 5 Asian Acts to Watch in 2008

Goodnight Electric

Thanks Lilian!

Japanese Game Show Clip - Pranks in a Library

More Japanese game show pranks - this time held in a library, where the contestants need to keep quiet!

This is a rather long clip, but if you see it through, you’ll watch a variety of things the contestants have to do, when they pick out an unlucky card, all while keeping quiet.

E.g. eating wasabi, being exposed to a balloon of bad odour, and having an old man take out his dentures and suck on your neck (eew!)

Here’s a nice little collection of clips from some of martial arts film star, Jet Li’s back catalogue. If you’ve seen most of these films, its good to see them again for a bit of nostalgia.

Kung Fu Panda : New Animated Film Trailer

Just came across this amusing trailer for a forthcoming animated film called Kung Fu Panda. It’s distinguishable angle is that it uses animals to depict animal kung fu styles.. No idea why this wasn’t done sooner!

Read on for the synopsis…

Enthusiastic, big and a little clumsy, Po is the biggest fan of Kung Fu around… which doesn’t exactly come in handy while working every day in his family’s noodle shop. Unexpectedly chosen to fulfill an ancient prophecy, Po’s dreams become reality when he joins the world of Kung Fu and studies alongside his idols, the legendary Furious Five - Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey -under the leadership of their guru, Master Shifu.

But before they know it, the vengeful and treacherous snow leopard Tai Lung is headed their way, and it’s up to Po to defend everyone from the oncoming threat. Can he turn his dreams of becoming a Kung Fu master into reality?

Po puts his heart - and his girth - into the task, and the unlikely hero ultimately finds that his greatest weaknesses turn out to be his greatest strengths.

Voiced by Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Ian McShane, Lucy Liu

Harbin Ice and Snow World 2007

R Todd King visits the 2007 annual Ice and Snow World, a beautiful winter event in Harbin, China.

His photos show stunningly huge and complex ice architecture - pagodas, towers, churches, a massive Buddha, and even a restaurant.

During the night, they’re all illuminated from within creating breathtakingly colourful buildings.

How the Japanese Learn English

This video clip shows a bizarre (to me) way of learning English. It teaches the Japanese how to react verbally when faced with the prospect of being mugged, in order to escape unharmed (sans property).

The subject matter is serious, but the approach is “entertaining“. Aerobic demonstrators bleating out the phrases (Take anything you want!) repetitively? Gotta see it to believe it…
