The Red Jacket (Hong Mian Ao)
China 2007, dir Zou Yalin, 90mins. In Mandarin with English subtitles

Red-Jacket

For anyone who ever ever begged their family for a toy or jacket of their dreams…

Cui Ju lives in a traditional village with her granny. When a film student comes to the village to record local activity, Cui Ju sets her heart on wearing the new jacket she saw at the market. But granny is poor, and the price of the jacket is too high. A warm and moving story about friendshp, family and growing up, starring a non-professional cast and set in stunning mountain scenery.

If you’re in any doubt, read the following reviews below which were composed by the “First Light Movies Young Jurors“, who say this is a live action drama with a documentary feel.

This is a story about a girl and her grandma. The girl wants a red jacket but the grandma is poor and can’t afford it. The grandma gets some material to make one…but will the girl appreciate it?

I liked the music as it was relaxing and suits the location. The costumes were great because they are very traditional Chinese.

I liked the way the camera angles showed you where they were…like when they panned across or looked down on the landscape. The lighting was good as it helped tell the story. When it was light they were happy, if it was darkly lit they were sad.

The little girl acted emotions very well. I liked this movie.

The sad story of Cui Ju who lives in the mountains with her grandmother. They don’t have much money. One day they go to the market and Cui Ju finds a lovely red jacket, and begs her grandma to buy it for her. They cannot afford it. They continue shopping and Cui Ju runs away. Her gran has to find her. She finds Cui Ju with the jacket on. Grandma would love to buy it for her but hasn’t got enough money.

The movie was filmed well. The songs they sung were repeated trough the film.

If you want to see real life in China, you will enjoy this film.

The film starts with the little girl living with her grandmother because her Dad has died and her mum is away working in the city. When the girl and her grandmother go to the town market she sees a red jacket that she really wants, but her grandma can’t afford it. When the grandma and little girl return to their village the little girls best friend is wearing a red jacket and she gets really jealous.

The costumes were really good and you knew where they were from as they were really traditional Chinese.

My favourite scene is the dance scene when the friend says she knows she is the best.
