Quirky Japanese Sport Championships : Mouse Pad Throwing

Amazing but true – and I’m sure you’re not surprised to hear that in Japan, mouse pad throwing has an actual championship event! Aichi is home to the Mouse Pad Throwing World Championships organised by the Japan Mouse Pad Throwing Association.

Mousepad-Throwing

Japan Mouse Pad Throwing Association founder Yasuji Matsunaga explains why the unlikely association came into being:

“When you’re feeling frustrated and just want to give something an almighty heave, a mouse pad is not likely to cause much harm, right? So we figured that throwing mouse pads would be a great way to let off some steam”.

About 50 men and women took part in the Second Mouse Pad Throwing World Championship held on a beach in July. The sport of mouse pad throwing requires competitors to bring their own pads. When they throw, they’re obliged to scream out “maaaa” but when their hurl goes out of bounds, it’s the crowd watching them that has to cheer.
