World’s Largest Carp Caught by Thai Fisherman

WeirdAsiaNews reports that a Thai fisherman caught what is believed to be the largest carp in history.  It weights about 260 lbs, while the old record was only 88 lbs.

When I first saw the photo above, something didn’t quite seem right. I didn’t think it was a Photoshop job. But the fish did look a little “light” and maybe artificial. What do you think?

However, I dug around on the web and amongst the scepticism on various other blogs, found a couple of news sites that seemed to legitimise the catch.

FishingMagic.com reports that the Jean-Francois Helias’ Fishing Adventures Thailand team caught this carp, and they’re actually known to be the most professional pro guides for freshwater sport fishing in South East Asia. The carp is also of the Siamese Giant Carp variety - with a size us Europeans aren’t used to.

In addition, the exact weigh of the fish could not be recorded accurately as there wasn’t a large enough set of scales to hand. Forget weighing it later - carp anglers apparently almost all operate catch and release, and certainly in a fishing guide business like this, you’d want to let the fish go so you can catch it again.

Here’s another shot of the fisherman struggling to control the fish:

hmmmmm

you are right it is looking a little light!!!

even Kik the angler who landed this great fish would proberly say the same.

infact if you ask Kik if that fish was 120 kg he will tell you NO it was 82kg!!

how do I know this??
easy I know Kik! I am also a fishing Guide here in bangkok!
ohh and I have landed a few of the monster carp at bung sam ran!

so why is it quoted at 120 kg? is this just some type marketing to “Lure” the clients?

but hey no need to believe me just go to Bung Sam Ran and ask around! many will tell you that it was weighed at 82kg! no need to take my word as a professional guide!

so why post this bit? I want a clean industry here in Thailand one that can be respected on the international circuit.
I want to see a industry that when a Pic is posted there is no doubt of it weight and no talking of hoaxs as that is bad for all companies!

but hey this posting I have done is only my opinion, you can form you own!

I would like to share with you my thoughts and offer my honest opinions, formed over a number of years on the character of Mr Jean-Francois Helias.

Before I start, I would like to point out, that the weight and measurements of any fish that I catch and indeed the recording of such information (other than the odd photograph) is totally irrelevant to me. I fish for my own personal pleasure and therefore the capture of any fish, big or small, is satisfaction enough. This however is just my personal preference and I would be the first to acknowledge that most
people don’t subscribe to this school of thought and take great pleasure in
being recognized for their Angling achievements. Problems start to appear
however when individuals lose sight of the fun aspect of Angling and begin
to focus on the numbers game, which is what I feel has happened over in
Thailand and is just one example of why these kinds of records no longer
interest me.

For many years Jean-Francois Helias has quite legitimately used his well documented success, as a marketing tool to promote his business, providing a reliable, value for money service which (in my experience) always delivers the goods with a money back guarantee if they don’t. In recent times competitors have entered the market place to challenge his monopoly and having no recognized credentials or customer base of their own, they try to undermine those of the competition, in the hope of attracting new business for themselves, from any loss of customer confidence the
opposition may suffer as a result of these tactics.

This sort of thing is a daily occurrence in the murky world of big business as we all know, but it really makes me sad to see it creeping into what is supposed to be a fun
sport. The fact that the fish in question was not even submitted for any
kind of record makes the whole situation even more distasteful and in my
opinion exposes this kiwi guy for the jealous, mean spirited individual he
really is.

Best Regards,

Mr Peter Cartwright . U.K
