Square Shaped Watermelons in Japan
Yes, you can now get square watermelons, but in Japan. Several things spring to mind – why didn’t I think of this before, this will fit much better in my fridge and will they taste funny? Well, they look a bit funny, but probably will just take getting used to.

It sounds surprisingly obvious to do – grow them in a square shaped container. However, an 84-year-old farmer succeeded in growing square-shaped watermelons about 30 years ago and has now a patent for containers to grow them, so too late.
These square shaped watermelons are on display in Zentsuji and are a specialty unique to this city on Shikoku island, western Japan. They’re about 19 cm long, are not so sweet and are reportedly popular as an ornament, which is not surprising as they sell for up to 25,000 yen (around £100) each!
