8 Year Old Girl to Run Across China

Zhang Huimin, an 8 year old girl from South China’s Hainan Province, is preparing for a South-to-North journey across the country – by running.

Her father will bring flags and banners along with them, asking each local government office to sign and stamp them, and then give them to the Chinese Olympic Committee as a gift, he added.

Eight year old Zhang, nicknamed “little magic deer“, has been in the spotlight since January this year when she spent 17 days on an 840 kilometre long run around Hainan Island. Since then, she has joined in several international marathon tournaments with astonishingly good results.

I think I spent marathon sessions on a ZX Spectrum when I was eight, so does that compare?

Being so young, there has already been concern about the heavy demands placed on her body and the pressure on her heart. However, her father insists that he’s put together a training regime that is tailor made to his daughter’s natural abilities.

That means:

Start running at 6.30am.
Have a break after 45km.
Between 2-3pm, begin the second part of her daily training.
Total: 60km.

I’ll have a think about this, the next time I go for a measly 10 minute run at the gym..
