Hong Kong picture moment : Chicken offering to ancestors
A chicken with a piece of roast pork in its mouth, is part of a group of offerings made to our ancestors. They’re placed in front of the altar during prayers and then afterwards, taken home to eat.

Retro Game & Watch : Nintendo Museum nostalgia
I grew up on these Game & Watch multi screen games. Unfortunately, I also grew out of them so god knows where mine are now. But luckily, we have the Nintendo Museum to remind us of all those hours spent getting our timing right on these tiny liquid crystal displays…

Japan’s hottest cell phone straps
Lisa Katayama of Tokyo Mango, has a post on Wired.com on the hottest cell phone straps. How she managed to select the best of them is beyond me. In Hong Kong, there are tons of these straps on every street corner store, market and megastore. Their diminutive size just means that the HK philosophy of “more is more” allows them to pack and display them in every spare inch of a rack. To view them is to either develop a supersonic, eagle-eyed scanning ability for the needle in the haystack or to provoke a slowly, but surely throbbing headache…

Excellent traditional Chinese Opera characters as cartoons
As if Chinese opera make-up and costumes aren’t beautiful and colourful enough already, here are very nicely rendered cartoons of classic opera characters. From VirtualChina.org.

Sze Tsung Leong : superb landscape photography
Sze Tsung Leong has a really nice collection of mainly landscape photos. There’s something really fascinating about seeing large scale representations of cities with seemingly infinite detail. I haven’t been to any exhibitions of these, but I’m sure the small screen doesn’t do any justice to the work. Probably best viewed large, where you can lose yourself in the detail.

Cooking Cute - bento-style, for the cutest, healthiest and most appetising meals
Ngoc, who is Vietnamese, is inspired by the Japanese art form, Bento, which refers to a packaged, single-portion, portable meal that is usually eaten at lunch, but also comes in larger sizes meant for use at picnics, dinner, and parties.
A bento generally consists of rice or noodles and some form of protein (e.g., meat, poultry, fish, tofu) accompanied by side dishes of raw, simmered, or pickled vegetables. There are many different types of bento boxes, ranging from traditional handcrafted wooden lacquerware to disposable containers. Most bento boxes have compartments or internal dividers for separate dishes.
Bento is an art form in Japan. Japanese women spend a good part of their mornings preparing bento for their families – there is even a sense of competition among mothers to see who can produce the most cute, appetising, and healthy lunch for their children.
Ngoc’s site has many useful sections for a gallery of her creations, information on the art of Bento, recipes and a comprehensive link resource for Bento information, supplies and other blogs! Now this is how you get your kids to eat healthy meals…
